John Wesley Dobbs (March 26, 1882 – August 30, 1961) was an African-American civic and political leader in Atlanta, Georgia. He was often referred to as the unofficial "mayor" of Auburn Avenue, the spine of the black community in the city.

John Wesley Dobbs John Wesley Dobbs was born March 26, 1882 in Marietta, Georgia to Minnie and Will Dobbs and grew up in poverty on a farm near Kennesaw. Two years after his birth his mother and father separated. John Wesley Dobbs founded a number of civil rights organizations in Atlanta in the 1930s and 1940s. A King family friend, Dobbs heard Martin Luther King, Jr., preach one of his early sermons at Ebenezer Baptist Church and said, hugging him: “Young man, you're gonna deliver. You've got the stuff!” (Pomerantz, 161).

John Wesley Dobbs . 1. John Wesley Dobbs (1882-1961), born in Marietta, Georgia, graduated from Morehouse College in 1901 and worked as a railway mail service clerk for 32 years. Along with King, Sr., he promoted black voter registration in Atlanta in the 1930s and 1940s.

His mother moved to Savannah to work in the home of a white family there, leaving Dobbs and his sister in the care of his grandparents and various other relatives. Since his death Dobbs has been honored with an elementary school named in his honour, a moument called Through His Eyes and receiving a lasting tribute on January 10, 1994, when his grandson, then Atlanta mayor Maynard Jackson, changed the name of Houston Street, site of the Dobbs home to John Wesley Dobbs Avenue.
